Buntingford’s annual youth football tournament has kicked off in style thanks to the support of a housebuilder in the town.
The 2018 Buntingford 5-a-side tournament is the biggest competition of its kind in Hertfordshire and will see 318 teams from across the county taking part in matches at The Bury, the home ground of Buntingford Cougars FC, over four weekends in June.
This year, the tournament is being sponsored by Fairview New Homes, the developer which is building new homes at The Village – a development which neighbours The Bury, off London Road.
Girls and boys teams, ranging in age from under-6s to under-18s, will be represented in the competition, while there are also separate adult and veterans tournaments.
The tournament got underway with the boys under-7s and under-10s competitions on Saturday 2nd June and will come to a close with the boys under-6s festival on Saturday 23rd June.
Richard Daly, one of the tournament’s organisers, said: “This is the biggest youth football tournament anywhere in Hertfordshire and we are thrilled to be welcoming so many people back to Buntingford again in 2018.
“The whole event is a huge operation, as we expect to have around 5,000 people enter The Bury over the seven dates in June, with approximately 2,400 footballers from more than 300 teams entering any one of the 18 competitions throughout the month.
“We are very grateful to all of our supporters and volunteers who make the tournament possible, and we would like to thank Fairview New Homes for their sponsorship of the 2018 event.”
Fairview is currently building its third phase of homes at The Village.
Jeremy Gee, Main Board Director for Fairview, said: “We are proud to be the main sponsors of the 2018 Buntingford football tournament, which is a wonderful event for the town and the surrounding area.
“I am sure this year’s event will be another resounding success and we would like to wish all of the young players taking part the very best of luck.”
