Moving home can be stressful – but there are ways to make it a more straightforward experience.

Here are our five top tips to help your move go smoothly.

Get quotes for removal vans and services

Chances are you’ll need to enlist the help of a removal company or hire a van when making the big move.

It pays to take the time to research local companies - by shopping around you can keep the cost down.

Aim to get between 3 and 5 quotes from established firms, ideally from personal recommendations.

Alternatively, Compare My Move or Move Me provides a list of local removal companies, or Green Man and Van is a popular packing and removal service operating in and around London.

Get labelling

It may sound obvious, but make sure you label boxes with exactly what’s in them.

To make things even easier, mark boxes up indicating which room the items belong in, or use stickers with a different colour for each room.

Redirect your post

It's something which is often overlooked in midst of a big move, but don't forget to inform your bank, employers and doctor to write to your new address.

If you've forgotten to change your details and are worried about missing important post, Royal Mail’s Redirection Service is a quick and easy way to make sure everything comes to you.

Out with the old

Moving home is a great time to clear out those old, tired items which have been cluttering up your home for years.

Go through your home, room by room, and throw anything which won’t be useful in your new home.

While you're at it, turn your efforts into pounds by selling those items destined for the skip on Gumtree or eBay instead.

Create a fact file

Compiling a fact file about your new home and area can be a real timesaver.

Be sure to look up useful everyday information like the bin collection days and the location of the nearest shop.

Try to find out who the current energy supplier is, and compare tarrifs on uSwitch to see if there's a better deal out there.
