On your marks, get set, bake!

The Great British Bake Off is back on our screens and while the competition heats up, why not try your hand at some of the bakes that captured the public’s eye.

Here we review 5 of the most memorable bakes from the previous 7 series.

Soda Bread

In series 6 Paul Jagger wowed audiences with his impressive ‘Lion Loaf’, made from cranberry and orange sweet soda bread.

Although replicating Paul’s impressive presentation will be tricky, his recipe for his sweet soda bread is simple to follow.

Serve with soup to make your bread a roaring success.

Baked Alaska

The now infamous Baked Alaska scandal propelled the show on to the front pages of national newspapers and the mainstream news.

Although ‘Bingate’ was a bitter experience for contestant Iain Watters, this recipe from the Queen of Baking herself, Mary Berry, will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Combine vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream for the best results.

Gingerbread house

Candice Brown’s gingerbread pub, or Louise William’s collapsed church may stick in the mind, but Mary Berry’s gingerbread house recipe demonstrates why she is so revered in the baking world.

Her gingerbread house is a fun Christmas treat to bake with your family or friends, and will make a fine centrepiece for a dinner party.

Finish with pipe icing decorations to top off your winter wonderland.

Trout picnic Pie

This showstopper recipe clinched the GBBO series 4 crown for Frances Quinn.

Layer marinated rainbow trout on top of roasted peppers, rice, asparagus, beetroot sweet potato and finally a small portion of smoked trout.

Avoid a soggy bottom by sprinkling breadcrumbs in to the base of your pie to prevent moisture seeping in to the pastry.

Chocolate and Orange mousse cake

Follow Mary Anne-Boerman’s recipe and become star baker amongst your friends with this rich chocolate and orange mousse cake.

One of the standout bakes in series 2, Mary’s cake is a mix of tangy chocolate orange mousse and joconde sponge cake.

If orange isn’t your scene, try this BBC Good food Chocolate and Raspberry mousse cake as an alternative.
