Originating in India, yoga combines physical, mental and spiritual methods of exercise to benefit both the mind and body. For those looking to take part in yoga for the first time, we have 5 top tips to help get you off to a good start.

Find a suitable environment

One of the many benefits of yoga is that you need so little space in order to exercise, but don't let that be an excuse to roll out your mat just anywhere.

Find a place which exudes calm for a true meditation experience. If that means escaping your typical environment, visit your local gym for more information on yoga classes available or contact specialist yoga studios for information on times and sessions.

Be at one with your mat

The only piece of equipment you really need to take part in yoga is simply a mat. Ensure you pick a mat which is easy to carry, provides adequate support and feels comfortable no matter which position you take. There is a huge range available for all price ranges so there is no need to spend a fortune to take part.

Build up your encyclopedia

Starting with the very basic steps of yoga, build your knowledge and your confidence by adding new techniques each workout. You could visit a studio, take part in a class or even watch online tutorials to build up your skills. You'll be a guru before you realise!

Collect your yoga data

To keep on top of your workouts, write a short journal entry each time you finish a session to note down how long you were working out for and which positions you took up during the yoga exercise. There are a variety of yoga apps available to help track your workouts that range from paid for premiums and free basic tracking apps.

Make time for meditation

Yoga is much more than just a physical exercise - it is also about finding inner peace. Make sure you incorporate meditation into your routine and help your worries melt away.
