On Tuesday 2nd September, a feature on Sky News highlighted the growing backlog at the Building Safety Regulator, with over 1,200 finished homes unable to be occupied and circa 35,000 homes unable to start construction, all down to delayed BSR approvals - a statutory process that should take between 8 and 12 weeks.

Our Managing Director, Jon Spring was interviewed by Sam Coates, Deputy Political Editor at Sky News, as part of the article, sharing his perspective on how delays are directly impacting developers and, ultimately buyers. We would like to clarify, that the reference Jon makes to 6, 9 and 12 months, relates to the total length of time the applications will have taken should approval be achieved within the current timescales being given by BSR, rather than the projects being delayed for that long.

At Fairview, we fully support the highest standards of building safety and the Government’s drive to deliver new homes at pace, this requires a regulator with adequate inhouse resources and expertise to handle the backlog and future supply of new applications. A system that fails to deliver will result in further sites being delayed or not started, leading to the new homes Londoners need remaining out of reach.
